John Van Eyck
has been active in the worlds of art and labor for over 35 years. He’s been Regional Director of Actor's Equity Association, and a representative for broadcast employees, film workers, scenic artists, healthcare workers and county employees. He's also served on the board of the National Endowment for the Arts, - on its Community Program Policy Task Force, the policy panel of its Expansion Arts Program — designed to fund projects rooted in inner city, rural, tribal and other under-served communities. He wants to help KPFA continue leading the Network.

Candidacy Statement:

Our planet is in environmental crisis, governments are expanding their use of war, our country’s economic system has collapsed, and on a local level people are losing their homes and healthcare. In the midst of this KPFA’s reporting is once again threatened. At the Pacifica national level there is a political and financial crisis bigger than ever.

New decisions are being made at the National Board (PNB) that have already impacted KPFA fund reserves and further threaten our local station’s assets.  We must assure that KPFA continues its strong leadership role within the network and in relations with the PNB. I believe that the candidates of the Concerned Listeners are our best bet for achieving this and I believe I can help.

I have been Senior Staff Director of medium sized unions in the entertainment Industry – Broadcast, Theatre, Film. I served on the policy-making boards of these organizations. Sometimes elected, other times appointed to the boards, I understand the distinctly different roles of board, administration and staff.

I served at the National Endowment for the Arts - working on its Community Program Policy Task Force and the Expansion Arts Program and Theatre panel. I worked to fund projects rooted in inner city, rural, tribal and other under-served communities.

I believe in responsible budgeting and administration at all stations; in strict financial controls within Pacifica, and in greater restraints on national spending unless it is in direct support of quality shared programming.

I am committed to inclusiveness in programming on which we build the listener base in all communities, and to building the station into the lives of working class communities of all ethnicities.  Broad arts and cultural programming must also continue. Quality radio programming must be accompanied by visibility in the communities.  Along with the major KPFA public events we need to encourage more frequent smaller local community events, especially in areas outside of Berkeley.

Help defend our local jewel against further incursions by the PNB into KPFA’s property and funds. Vote for the entire Concerned Listeners Slate.
